Unfathomable Ruination: Misshapen congenital entropy
27/03/13 || The Duff
Unfathomable Ruination are a UK-based death metal band that completely smoke; I don’t know where they’ve come from, but if you’ve seen the video for their track “Extinction Algorithm in Procession” (found here), then you know that these guys are beyond the regular fare, veterans of classic and newer-age death metal on top of exceptionally gifted musicians.
This is their debut album, the follow-up to the three track self-titled E.P., released in 2010, and although the band seems to be rather well known on the ol’ SMN forums, “Misshapen Congenital Entropy” seems to have passed under the radar of many. In my mind, like Sweden’s Soreption, this band is bringing all that is right back to death metal, including a much needed bit of ye ol’ Polish death groove.
Now, if you’ve checked out that video, you’ll notice that ‘restraint’ is not something these Brits practice; although they do love indulging in the bustin’ out of the groove, they are too seasoned in their craft as musos to sit still for long. So, the drawback might be that they try to insert too much into one song. Unfathomable Ruination are not brilliant songwriters by a long stretch, but in terms of what they do provide they tie it all together nicely – traditional rhythms peppered with tech mastery.
The influences are many, as modern as Sickening Horror (the riff at 3:18 in “Carved Inherent Delusion” would surely have them Greeks blushing for shame and possibly erections), Decapitated circa “Nihility”, and then the slam variety of Devourment, the evil riffery of Immolation, Vader, and BDM of Disgorge, and then a classic, tight-knit tech death variety merged with stunning lead-work, both riff-wise and in the solos. Mix this with a phenomenal drummer who outshines the rest of the band, somehow, yet never oversteps.
In conclusion, with a crisp but marginally underfunded production for this style of death metal, Unfathomable Ruination should be recognised as one of the leading UK bands of the underground scene now that Infected Disarray is either on hiatus, has stepped down or just taking their time in writing new material. It is a shame that sub-par outfits as Cerebral Bore receive so much recognition when, much to my ignorance, the country can provide material of this calibre satisfying both tech and groove cliques alike.
